Checklist Before You Upgrade to Catalina!

A little bit of advice from me to you! Before you download and install macOS Catalina. To ensure you hit no bumps in the road. This guide will help your Upgrade or Install goes as Smoothly as Possible.

You don’t want any sudden disasters. Do you?

  • Make Backups
  • Make sure you know your Apple ID
  • Check you have enough Storage
  • Update your Apps and Programs
  • Make sure your Current MacOS is up to date!

Make backups

It’s imperative. Make sure you have backups and the more, the better.

There is even the slightest chance something goes wrong. You need to be sure that you have all the bays covered. So you don’t lose your data.

You will be kicking yourself if you lose some valuable photos or documents.

So ensuring you don’t lose anything. Means make a backup then another one and another one. You can never be too sure.

I always make sure I have three backups of my data.

  • 1) iCloud Backup
  • 2) Time Machine Backup
  • 3) Manual Backup to External HDD or USB. (copy files, photo and documents)

Using Time machine is simple and effective for full system backups

Make sure you know your Apple ID.

Apple likes its user to use an Apple ID for all its Devices although it’s not a necessity. You will need an AppleID to update/upgrade to MacOS Catalina.

Even to download any app. Plus the icloud backup or icloud Drive comes in useful for storing your Photos or document.

Make sure before you download and Upgrade to macOS Catalina that you have an iCloud. AND you know the password 100%.

Also actually log in and check its correct.

“iv had so many jobs for clients in the past, and they’ve had a password written down. in a notepad and that wasn’t even the correct password.”

CHECK IT!

Also, check if your iCloud’s linked to another device like an iPhone or Ipad. In case you get authentication when resigning in!

CHECK IT

Check you have enough free space.

The Apple MacOS Catalina is about 6.5GB. That’s Huge. Make sure you have that available!

Apple recommends before doing the MacOS Catalina Upgrade. That you have 20GB of FREE storage space, this might be true.

But personally, when I do updates for clients. I always make sure several factors in regards to free space.

These are;

  • Make sure you have the recommended free space PLUS 10% of the hard disk space. Apple devices rely heavily on the hard disk, caching. So iv always made sure that my 10% rule applies
  • Make sure your desktop is clean. If it’s not. Create a new folder. Place everything into a folder from your desktop. Then store this somewhere else other than your desktop.
  • Empty Trash
  • Delete Unwanted Downloads from the Download Folder!
  • Use a Cleanup Utility like CCleaner Mac. (To clear unnecessary and unwanted files. from the system).
  • Run Disk Utility Post Cleanup! (making sure everything is just right)

I would recommend doing the above before creating a backup.

Update your Current Verison of MacOS

I would always update the current version of your operating system. Before upgrading to a new version.

Updates can contain hardware and firmware updates for your device.

The updates will ensure that the install of MacOS Catalina update goes smooth.

  • Click "Apple logo (top left) >
  • Select "About this Mac >
  • Choose " Software Update

Update your apps.

One of the significant differences with MacOS Catalina is that its solely a 64Bit operating system, which means that Apple is turning off and stopping support for all 32Bit apps.

So that if you have old 32bit software, it will not work. For instance, Microsoft office 11 and older is 32bit.

Don’t worry if you don’t know what apps are 32bit or 64bit. Catalina will notify you during the install of Catalina. Plus more developers have 64bit alternatives or Updates to their respective programs.
